Phone lap timer

Mount your phone in the car for live delta to your best lap, a predicted lap time, real sector times, and a feed to the event board.

No timing kit? Your phone is a lap timer. The phone lap timer uses its GPS to do what a dedicated unit does: lap times, real sectors, and a live delta to your best.

What you get

  • Lap times from start/finish crossings, interpolated between GPS fixes.
  • Real sector times from lines laid on your first lap, the same every lap so sectors compare.
  • Live delta to your best lap, by position on track rather than elapsed distance.
  • Predicted lap (best lap plus the current delta) and Delta-V, your speed against your speed at this spot on your best lap.
  • Ideal lap: the sum of your best sectors.
  • Automatic start/finish: from the circuit’s known line, or placed where you first reached speed and confirmed when you come back round. No button, and the first lap still counts.
  • Feeds the event board when the organiser allows phone timing.

How it works in detail: GPS lap timing.

Start a session

  1. Open the timer from Timing in the app, or https://app.outlap.xyz/timing/new.

  2. Choose the circuit and your car, and optionally an event you’re entered in so your laps appear on its board.

  3. Calibrate if needed. Mount the phone as you will drive, and capture its tilt so g-readings are right. Calibration can be saved per car or as an account default.

  4. Start, put the phone in its mount and go.

The screen stays awake while the session runs.

Better GPS: RaceBox

Pair a RaceBox for up to 25 Hz GNSS instead of the phone’s roughly 1 Hz. This needs Chrome or Edge on Android, Mac, Windows or ChromeOS (not Safari on iPhone or iPad). See RaceBox.

Marshal phone

A marshal at the line can tap each car through on a phone: a timing beam for the price of a phone. Open https://app.outlap.xyz/timing/marshal.

After the session

Your laps are saved to your history, and show on the event board if you linked an event. Review sessions under your timing history, or import data from a separate logger: Import logger laps.
